Scope and Contents

Papers of the Southall family of Williamsburg, Va. including correspondence, 1828-1830, of Peyton Alexander Southall but mostly comprised of the legal correspondence, 1831-1851, of George Washington Southall and documents concerning lawsuits and civil proceedings in many Virginia counties and including account books, 1832-1846, of George Washington Southall. Prominent correspondents include Lemuel Jackson Bowden, Richard Coke, John Augustine Deneufville, Thomas Roderick Dew, George Frederick Holmes, James Alexander Seddon, Abel Parker Upshur and Henry Alexander Wise.

Obituary of Mary Southall Jones, wife of Henly T. Jones and transcript of November 5, 1863 letter from Edward S. Joynes at Halifax C.H. (Va.) to R.G. H. Kean, Chief of Bureau of War about Miss Mary Southall who is seeking employment.  Also mentions Miss Southall's leadership in trying to save William and Mary's library when it was burned.  Addition Mss. Family History:

The Southall family were residents of Williamsburg, Va. Peyton Alexander Southall (1804-1855) was a captain's clerk and purser in U.S. Navy and his brother George Washington Southall (1810-1851) was a lawyer and member of Virginia House of Delegates.
