Frank James is a former pupil of the Campbell County Elementary School. Frank James describes his experiences attending a Virginia Rosenwald School during segregation. Copy of an April 7, 1927 letter from John G. James to Samuel Y. Ferguson about Andrew Jackson and the VMI (Virginia Military Institute) Cadets in the Civil War and about Charles A. James, a student at the University of Virginia, who served with Robert E. Lee.

The John G. James papers were given to the Virginia Military Institute by an ancestor in 1992.

Legal and business papers of James Lewis Anderson, lawyer of Richmond, Va. Includes certificate, 1919, signed by Westmoreland Davis relieving him of his duties on the Legal Advisory Board because of the end of World War I; his appointment, 1908, signed by Claude A. Swanson appointing him as a delegate to the American Prison Association; and accounts, 9 September 1916-22 January 1917, of the Hermitage Country Club.

Notes, circa 1779-1844, of James Lewis [Gloucester County, Virginiaa. ?] concerning farming and math (using farming examples). The book contains some dated entries ranging from about 1779 to 1847 and includes loose newspaper clippings.

Letter copybook, 1804-1806, of James Patton, planter, commission merchant, and shipowner, Alexandria, Va.

The collection relates to the James River Canal and Kanawha Company, which officially gained a charter in 1835. Included are a list of subscriptions sold to private individuals, a letter to the auditors office discussing current and previous subscriptions, a letter from a prospective surveyor and a list of tollage rates along the canal. Individuals mentioned are John Hartwell Cocke, and his son John Hartwell Cocke Jr.

Includes accounts as a doctor in Augusta County, Virginiaa. with members of the Blakemore family and with Jedediah Hotchkiss (p. 33) and accounts of drawing up legal documents, surveying, and selling merchandise (including books, papers, and school supplies). Also contains register of births of slaves, free blacks, and whites (1857-1897).

A twelve page extended letter written by Jane Davis Syle while she was on a missionary voyage to China with her husband, Edward W. Syle. (Contains language that is derogatory towards the people of Asia and of Asian descent.)

Newspaper clippings about Samuel M. Janney, a minister of the Society of Friends in Loudoun County, Virginia. Topics include reviews of his book, "History of the Religious Society of Friends, from its rise to the yar 1828,"  articles on other publications on the Society of Friends and obituaries for Samuel M. Janney. Includes a letter from S.M. Janney to T. E. Zell, dated 1865, about the publication of volume 4 of his book.

Ten tax books for Jefferson County, Virginia from 1814-1878 and one Execution Book for 1825-1830. Braxton Davenport and William B. Magruder, Sheriff and Deputy Sheriff, were the tax collectors. 1814-1815, South District, 1814-1815, North District and 1817, 1816, 1826, 1827, 1828, 1829, 1862 and 1878.

Jefferson County was created from Berkeley County in 1801. See Mss. Acc. 2008.321 Berkeley County for tax lists prior to 1801 and overlapping years.
