Scope and Contents

This collection is composed of transcripts and cassette tapes of interviews with 80 people by the Woman's Club of Williamsburg, Virginia to document the World War II experiences of people living in Williamsburg, Virginia in 2004. Folders may contain correspondence, biographical information, copies of photographs, previously written remembrances of WWII, and release forms. The collection also includes a small number of files created by the Woman's Club during the duration of the project.

Content Description

Photos, letters, a diary, an account book, and an album belonging to members of the Wingfield-Britton family. The collection ranges from pre-civil war to the 1980s, with the bulk of the material dated around the early 1900s. The correspondence covers a number of topics including health and family life, farming, and travel in the north-western valley region of Virginia.

L. J. Wolfgram Letters to Hazel Tavares Letters

Scope and Contents

Letters from Lyle J. Wolfgram to Hazel Tavares from 1943-1945.  Wolfgram served in World War II as rank Pharmacist Mate Third Class with the United States Marines, Medical Field Service, Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines. The 3rd Battalion of the 3rd Marines formed in New River (Camp Lejeune), North Carolina and participated in the Battle of Bougainville and also saw heavy fighting on Guam.

Includes photos of Okinawa, Nagasaki, Naha, Ominato, Tokyo, Nagasaki, Sasebo, Fukuoka, Kagoshima, Matsuyama, Kure, Hiroshima, and Kyota. While some photos are more of a sightseeing nature, many depict American service men and army camps, Japanese prisoners of war, and destroyed cities, including Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the atomic bombing. Stereograph cards, some printed by the Keystone View Company, of scenes from World War II, including a hospital scene, burned wreck of a Zeppelin, grave of Lieut. Quentin Roosevelt, pontoon bridge inspection, bugle call, french flower lady decorating a soldier and clothing issue at Ft. Lee, Virginia.

A blue ribbon with name plate "Lutz" and silk baglike item with "Hankies" and "U.S. Army, Fort Lewis, Wash." printed on it have been transferred to the artifact collection.
