Scope and Contents Based on information gathered by Special Collections staff in 2011, there appear to be three possible creators of the ledger: William Tandy Burrus (1766 or 1776-1831), WTB (?-prior to 1836?), or William Stevens (1773-1843).The ledger (200 pp., 15 pages are missing in the front, several pages are missing in back, and several halves of pages are missing) records transactions for miscellaneous merchandise, wheat and tobacco. Letters, 1819-1846, to Henry Fairfax, merchant, Dumfries, Prince William County, Va. Most concern money owed to Fairfax. Letter, 1 November 1827, from James Osbourn is written on the back of a printed circular entitled "Proposals for publishing . . .Good News from a Far Country . . . ." Includes letter relating to the hiring of a slave Burwell and another letter concerning the illness of Burwell's wife; and letter, 1828, written by William B. Tyler.

Three account books of free African American, Thaddeus S. Harris, of Abingdon, Virginia, dated 1855-1861, 1861-1866 and 1868. Goods purchased include items such as tobacco, sardines, cheese, sugar, candy, hair trims and shaves. Some books have an index. Census reports list him as a barber and confectioner.

Scope and Contents Account book belonging to merchants, Johnson and Nutt.  Notation in front of book says that all all assets belonging to William Nutt were transferred to Amos Johnson in 1823.  A few accounts for the estate of Amos Johnson in 1853 are near the end of the ledger.  Another note near front of book, paraphrased:  Grandmother Johnson was named Furman before marriage.  First married Hucherson, then Garret Johnson.  Sarah M? was her daughter by first husband and half sister to my mother.  Timothy...
