Scope and Contents
Personal papers of and concerning Julian Alvin Carroll Chandler, president of William & Mary. The collection includes biographical materials, a student notebook kept at John Hopkins University; scrapbook of letters compiled in honor of the fifteenth anniversary of Chandler's presidency; and correspondence, 1895-1916. There is correspondence of Frederic William Boatwright and some letters concerning the Richmond Academy, the Women's College of Richmond, and Richmond College.
Acc. 2012.062 contains report cards from Chandler's student years at William & Mary, notes on historical subjects, papers written by Chandler, and a lecture given at Richmond College.

Biographical Information:
Julian Alvin Carroll Chandler, the 18th president of the College of William and Mary served from 1919 until his death May 31, 1934. Chandler is credited with transforming this institution from a small, struggling liberal arts college for men into a modern coeducational institution of higher learning.
Chandler was born in Caroline County, Virginia October 29, 1872 and earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from William & Mary in the early 1890s. He then earned his doctorate in history at Johns Hopkins University in the mid 1890s. After an early teaching career at both Richmond's Woman's College and Richmond College, he served for a decade as superintendent of the Richmond public schools, overhauling and expanding that school system on the progressive model before returning to his alma mater.
