Scope and Contents

Mss. 83.C36: Papers, 1950-1982, of R. Harvey Chappell, Jr., relating particularly to his tenures as president of the Virginia State Bar and the Richmond Bar Association and as a member of the council and executive committees of those organizations. Includes correspondence relating to philanthropic endeavors as well as to certain legal cases. The collection includes numerous legal briefs and documents as well as printed volumes.

Subjects covered by the papers include advertising by lawyers, contingency fees, the unauthorized practice of law, legal aid, legal ethics, lawyer referrals, legal assistants (paralegals) and the "Crippled Children's Hospital of Richmond, Va."

Addition 1992.044 contains 20 boxes of professional papers relating to the American Bar Association, American College of Trial Lawyers, and the W&M Law School. 

Addition 1994.087 contains correspondence of Chappell as president of Eta Circle, Omicron Delta Kappa and as president of the Wythe Law Club at the William & Mary. Includes constitution of the Wythe Law Club.

Addition 1999.019B contains correspondence between Chappell and Supreme Court Justices Lewis F. Powell, Jr., Harry A. Blackmun, William J. Brennan, Jr., Warren E. Burger, Thurgood Marshall, Sandra Day O'Connor, William H. Rehnquist, Antonin Scalia, John Paul Stevens, and Bryan R. White, as well as other individuals, among them Brian Dickson, Kenneth Starr, Charles Robb..

Biographical Information:

Robert Harvey Chappell, Jr. was born 28 November 1926 in Clarksville, Va. He was the son of Robert Harvey Chappell and Edna Kathryn Lumpkin Chappell. He served in the U. S. Air Force 1944-1946. He graduated from the College of William and Mary. He was a lawyer, President of the Richmond Bar Association (1969-1970) and President of the Virginia State Bar Association (1977-1978). He was a student at William and Mary from 1945-1950 and a member of the Board of Visitors from 1970-1976.
