The University Archives Faculty-Alumni File is a reference collection of materials relating to and about individuals associated with the College of William and Mary. The collection includes secondary sources such as news clippings and transcriptions from published sources. An individual might be represented by one item or several folders. The dates associated with each name reflects the dates of the individual's known association with William & Mary.
Not all persons associated with William & Mary since 1693 are represented in the collection. Additional materials or information concerning faculty and alumni may be available elsewhere in the Special Collections Research Center.
Collection is open to all researchers. Manuscript collections and archival records may contain materials with sensitive or confidential information that is protected under federal or state right to privacy laws and regulations, such as the Virginia Public Records Act (Code of Virginia. § 42.1-76-91); and the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (Code of Virginia § 2.2-3705.5). Confidential material may include, but is not limited to, educational, medical, and personnel records. If sensitive material is found in this collection, please contact a staff member immediately. The disclosure of personally identifiable information pertaining to a living individual may have legal consequences for which the College of William and Mary assumes no responsibility.
Before publishing quotations or excerpts from any materials, permission must be obtained from the Curator of Manuscripts and Rare Books, and the holder of the copyright, if not Swem Library.

The files are in alphabetical order by last name. Files for individuals with the same first and last names were then filed chronologically based on their relationship to William & Mary.
Additions to the collection are made at the discretion of the University Archivist.
In June 2016, the collection was surveyed and original primary source material was removed from the collection and given collection guides to make access and discoverability easier for our patrons.
A card catalog located in Special Collections lists the names of folders that were originally available in the Faculty-Alumni File Collection. It was maintained and added to through January 2007. If a folder contained only primary source material, it was physically removed and the name was removed from the collection guide. As such the card catalog is no longer current and the collection guide should be consulted for the collection.
