Scope and Contents

Printed ephemera, newspapers, and other publications, related to the 1936 Olympic games in Berlin, Germany, collected by James G. Driver, one of the trainers with the US team. Also included is a photo album, individually assembled with commercially produced photo prints and several postcards. This photo album includes pictures of Olympic village, the torch relay, the opening ceremony, and athletes (including Jesse Owens and Luz Long, among others).

Other items included are: a pamphlet titled "German Youth in a Changing World,"  which discusses the Hitler Jugend  (Hitler Youth) and the history of youth in Germany and its future direction;  a book with images of Berlin, Potsdam, and their environs (in German, with French and English translations); a program, with an introduction by Joseph Goebbels  with sections on the city, its history, German culture, and the 1936 Games (in German, with English, French, and Spanish translations).

Also included is list of match-ups in either wrestling or boxing, listing referees and nations fighting/judging.

Biographical Information:

James G. Driver was a William & Mary alumnus, athletic director of the University of Virginia and athletic trainer for the US 1936 olympic team.

Custodial History:

Materials were collected by James G. Driver before they came into the possession of James S. Kelly, who passed them on to Will Molineux to deliver to Swem SCRC.
