Scope and Contents

50 page notebook belonging to the "Matrous Circle of Mt Independance [sic] Grange" a ladies social & sewing circle existing during 1910 in Falmouth, Maine. Contains notes from meetings, by-laws of the circle, and records of members. The group consisted of about 30 members led by Zeply Soule and Inez Richards. Ruby Wescott was the President of the group and Zeply Soule was the Vice President. Inez Richards was the treasurer and the annual fee for membership was ten cents. The purpose of the Circle was to "Strengthen the bond of unity among the Sisters", "To follow the teachings of our order and to help the sick and needy", "To increase the sociability and interest in our Grange", and "By sewing, entertainments and fairs, to increase the funds of our Treasury." The group was organized in January of that year, and the book records meetings, usually about every week, until Jan 27, 1911. The meetings usually recorded all the dues and monies existing, the material they bought to sew with, the names of the members present and any new members, the articles they sewed, baked, or otherwise sold.
