Manning wanted to fire The Rev. Joseph B. Bernardin for “insubordination” and “disobedience” but the Dean of the School, the Very Rev. Howard Chandler Robbins didn’t think he had the right to dismiss a clergyman of the cathedral staff.  Rev. Robbins resigned in support of his opinion.  Rev. Bernardin was asked to resign both positions as Master in the Cathedral Choir School and as Assistant to the Dean of the Cathedral.)
