Scope and Contents

One 1 ZaÏre bank note. The front of the note features Mobutu Sese Seko, president of Zaire in 1981, to the left and a pouncing leopard to the right. the number "1" is printed in the center and "UN ZAÏRE" is printed on top of it. The back of the bank note features elephant tusks to the left and a pyramid and factory printed in the center. The number "1" is printed to the right of the pyramid and factory and "ZAÏRE" is printed over the number "1." According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury Treasury Reporting Rates as of March 31, 1981, 1 ZaÏre had the exchange rate of approximately $3.09. The bank note belonged to Armand J. Galfo U.S. Air Force Reserves officer and Assistant Dean of the School of Education at the College of William and Mary between 1965 and 1966. The bank note measures approximately 6.5in. (length) x 3in. (width) and is in good condition. There is a brown stain at the top right of the bank note on the front and the bottom left edge is bent. Transferred from the Armand J. Galfo Papers.
