The Public Hospital
Scope and Contents
The Public Hospital was America’s First Public Institution Devoted Exclusively to the Care and Treatment of the Mentally Ill. With the completion of the hospital, Colonial Williamsburg has reconstructed the last of the 18th-century capital city’s major public buildings. In the 18th century, the hospital was the last public building constructed prior to the outbreak of the American Revolution in town. It grew from this original building to a complex of many before it burned on the night of June 7, 1885. (large-sized photo)
