Scope and Contents

Reproduction family photographs in the Williamsburg area from the 1940’s-1950’s, many of the Minor and Christian homes. Photograph of “Wall Plantation” in Warwick County, Virginia. Reminiscences of Estelle Welch Habel who married James Turner Christian, about the Civil War while a young girl near Warrenton, VA. When General Geary and his staff took over their family home. Colonel Atwell brought his wife dressed as a soldier and he later helped save Estelle’s grandfather’s house in The Plains when it was going to be burned. Another letter by an unknown woman telling her children about plantation life before the war, especially the lives of the enslaved people. The house was called “Old Kalarama” and “Gratis.” Reminiscences of Mrs. William Thompson Christian (Jane Sofia Gilliam) about the Civil War, mentioning a battle near her home and working at Winder Hospital in Richmond. A short genealogy of the Gilliam and Christian families is included. A story written by Jane Sophia Gilliam Stokes about Louisa Stoke, her Nanny, whose Mother and Grandmother were owned by her Grandparents in Prince George County.
