Scope and Contents

The following excerpts were provided by the seller: "Catfish, shrimp, and oysters are the main fish products handled. There is a shrimp and canning factory on the dock. About 25 shrimpers are the fleet usually based here as well as small catfishermen's boats.......There are three rather dubious small marine railways which belong to this same shrimp company"........" The town of Darien is located on a hill at the north end of the bridge. The shrimp docks are located at the bottom of the hill. The town has 3 or 4 grocery stores-prices slightly higher than Jax (Jacksonville, Florida)...a meat market, drug store, 5 & 10, ".........." Coming up Darien River, waves lapping on shoals, strong S.W. to W. wind blowing. Difficult to look into wind. ".......Darien Waterfront : White bridge standing above everything at low tide.......Thousand and one negroes, few whites, around docks and in front of stores on hill."......" All stores small at bus station & filling station, negroes sitting on bench outside. Man sweeping. Ask him for ticket, finishes sweeping first. Station needs cleaning and paint.".........." People : Waterfront. Young boy, about 18 or nineteen, very tall, slender, blond, tanned face. Very athletic. Runs up and down pilings on docks--about 10 feet to water--at low tide with greatest of ease.....Report from man on gas dock that he has just returned from reformatory for inhumane treatment of police dog. Works now with father in cleaning catfish which father catches."......" Old Tug Captain : Retired tug captain--tow boat man. Used to runs tows drawing 8-10 feet from Norfolk to Jacksonville. Got tired of strain of crossing sounds with outfits and retired to catfish. About 60. Tanned face, slightly stout. Blue eyes that are wrinkled at corners.......Gas Man : Runs gas dock & ice house. Loaded 8 tons of ice aboard shrimpers when they set out for Key West."
