Diary, 1874 kept by a girl in southwest Albany, New York. Ella Lockwood was 11 when she started the diary, and turned 12 on 27 August, 1874. The entry for that day reads: "Miss Ella Lockwood's birthday today. 12 years old. Went to school today, didn't get whiped [sic] either."

Her entries are brief and record the weather, school days, meals and family members' illnesses. She also records her chores, visitors to the house, work done by family members and other around the house, gifts received for holidays, trips to town, meetings attended by family members, etc. The followig excerpts were provided by the seller: “January 14th, Snowing today. Papa carried self and Maggie to school. Snow very deep. Mamma cutting Anna a dark and pink apron this evening. A rehearsal to the academy this evening to speak pieces. Uncle Jacob Hunt died today.” “January 24th, Pleasant today. Aunt Polly’s funeral today at the church. Papa and mamma and Maggie went. Papa one of the bearers. Alida, Anna and self stayed home. Uncle Robert called here. D. Lockwood has the measles. Maggie to the store this evening.” “February 16th, Squally today. To school today. Maggie and Alida to Derike Lockwood. He is dead. He died in the afternoon. Derike Rundell here with his oxen to help pa did his cellar. Eleck Scriver and Smith Davis here to work. Had a perfect lesson.” “March 12th, Pleasant today. Papa carried Claria home today. Alida Lockwood’s birthday today. 6 years old. Egbert Whitford is dead. He died between 12 and 1 o’clock in the day time. Went to singing school this evening.” “March 31st, Pleasant today. Washing today. The folks are a drawing stones to the church for to build a wall. David Lake and Bert and Smith and James here to work. Mrs. Ingall’s called. Aunt Ester Hunt, Grandpa, Mr. Nobles, has political readings this eve. Aunt Angeline called.” “April 28th, Mrs. H. Lockwood’s birthday, 37 years old. Mama and Maggie up to Uncle T. L. Eugene Spalding is not any better. George Robbins starts for N.Y. City.” “July 12th, Rain to day. Church today. Papa, mama and Aunt Eliza went baptizing today. Mrs. Simmons and Mr. Gifford of Freehold. Mama seen Louise J. Remmel.” “August 11th, Pleasant today. Aunt Sylvia and Vern came down here and stayed today cutting apples. 2 men killed yesterday by lightening, Lewis Lockwood and William Meher. W. Meher’s funeral today and Mr. Lockwood’s not until Thursday.” “August 27th, Miss Ella Lockwood’s birthday today. 12 years old! Went to school today. Didn’t get whipped either.” “November 22nd, Pleasant today. Papa, mama and Maggie went to church today. After dinner went out a riding in the sleigh. It is great sleighing. Went up to grandpa’s.
