Scope and Contents

Diary, 1935, of a teenage boy of Brooklyn, New York. Daily diary entries record school and leisure activities, holidays, chores performed and the occasional comment on local or national events. He mentions that his family owned a beauty parlor and observed Jewish holidays.

He first attended Ultrecht High School and then transferred to Samuel J. Tilden High School. He seemed to have done well in school and enjoyed playing the violin. He mentions library visits and reading, frequent visits to the movies and also going out with his friends. The following excerpts were provided by the seller: "Had a fine time in school, kidding around with everyone. Mr. Fine called me up and gave me a penalty for making a nuisance of myself. I had to write a long sentence 25x. This seems like fate. The whole term I was a wise guy and got away with it, but when I'm pulled out and didn't do anything, then I get a penalty. Had so much homework and study that I didn't get the time to practice the violin .... Gabe came to house around 8 o'clock. We went to 47th street. Saw the usual three around 8:30. The more I see of them, the more disgusted I get. We went to Florence’s house - Sat around and watched fools sit around and amuse themselves very stupidly with their conversation and various hackneyed acts that they put on. Gabe and Myra had as usual several arguments .... Started off well in English class, Girl named Chibnick also very high .... Went to Gabe's house, from where I went with his family to his aunt and uncle's apartment in 6 story house on 12 Ave. between 48 & 47. They had some swell eats there, it was a celebration, Gabe's cousin's wife had a baby boy and they were going to circumcise it. Then went to Marvin's house. Whole 47th street crowd there. Had lots of fun pretending I was half drunk. Went home about 11 o'clock. Myra seemed to act a trifle too good to us and we were suspicious about the reason or reasons .... Met Gabe and went to 47th St., then to Selma's house. Included in the party were Sonny, Harris, Herman, Myra, Harriet and Ruth. Watched and studied them all evening. They go lower and lower in my philosophical ideas ..... Went for a walk along avenue. Saw 47 St. bunch of boys playing ball. The more I notice their actions, the more childish and stupid they get .... I went to the Israel Zion Hospital with my mother and kid brother Sam, who has to go there weekly because of his heart .... Went to meeting place but Gabe wasn't there. Went over his house and met his sister, Renee, who told me that he contracted Scarlet Fever last week. He has 98, normal temperature now but must remain in bed for 10 days yet to prevent kidney trouble or internal complications .... Today is a Jewish holiday ___ and I am not going to school .... I have several curious wounds on my face. It does not extend far enough in to bring forth the blood, but only the plasma oozes out .... News came that Will Rogers and Wiley Post died in an airplane crash. Post twice flew around the world, once with Harold Gatty. Papers were full about Post and Rogers. A plane was bringing them back from Alaska when they crashed .... Went to Ambassador Theatre. Saw Gangler's Circus on the stage. They gave out 10 prizes of fish bowls, checkers, etc ..... Wrote another letter to Shirley Temple Doll Contest. This time I imitated childs printing. It wasn't very hard for I printed with my left hand .... A customer told me tonight that I should go to Julliard School of Music at 122nd St & Claremont Ave, Manhattan, New York. I should inquire about the possibilities of an audition. I talked it over with my parents and we decided that I would go tomorrow .... Went to the dentist, he said that I have a cavity in my tooth and my nerve had been reached. I have to come on Saturday and take out the tooth (I'm shivering already. Boo!) ..... Had a fire at 1:00 this morning. The candy store which is underneath the bedrooms burned. The smoke was so thick, that had I not been awaked at that time, I probably would have suffocated. My brother and sister were also sleeping. It was lucky that my father and mother were sitting in the kitchen talking to a visitor (Irene the manicurist). We ran out in our pajama's into the drugstore on the corner. Then about 10 minutes later, when the firemen had extinguished the fire, we went back .... We all have to sleep temporarily in the living room until the bedrooms are repaired ". Some of the names he mentions in the diary are: Mrs Dennis, Henry Millman, Sonny Hiltzie, Sylvan Cohen, Sidney Oberman, Ruth Stern, Miriam Dertka, Ruth Lippell, Frieda Bloom, Robert Friedman, Joseph Smith, Sylvia Wasserman, Manny Alpert, and others.
