Juan Tomás Mejía Letter with Estate Inventory

Content Description

A six page letter including a preliminary estate inventory from Juan Tomás Mejía, a Dominican friar. In the letter, Mejía requests that he be granted a license to make an official inventory of the estate of his late sister, María de Buitrón y Mujica, who owned property in Mexico City, as well as in Guanajuato. Included in the preliminary inventory are the names and ages of three people enslaved, Magdalena, Petrona, and Nicolás.

A thirty-nine page Christmas memento book made for members of the Signal Corps Female Telephone Operators Unit. This memento contains letters of appreciation from commanding officers, commendation notes for the unit, thanks for the unit's service, an essay praising their work, three photographs of the officers who wrote the appreciation letters, two photographs of Corps members at work, and an alphabetical list of the women who served.

Content Description From the Collection:

The civil war diary of Horatio S. Carnrite, who enlisted in the 184th New York Infantry regiment. This collection contains the 134 page diary along with a 56 page handwritten transcription. There are a few mentions of a Black cavalry regiment and also of a raid into Confederate territory by Union soldiers led by a Black woman.

Content warning: contains language that is derogatory towards enslaved people, as well as towards people of color.
