As the only seminary in Virginia devoted to the teaching of the Epicopal faith, Hubbard argues fervently for such monetary support for this institution.

One page document detailing a meeting of 'gentlemen' at the house of Van Laer for the purpose of debating the question of secession by one state or a minority of states from the Union. After debate, those present signed either in the affirmative opinion or the negative. The final piece of the document reads, "After a full discussion it was decided in favor of the affirmative."

Two page document written in Spanish of an agreement to purchase two enslaved persons in the colony of Peru in 1561. Included in the agreement are illustrations of the unique identifying brands on the legs of the two individuals.

Content Description From the Collection: Four page letter describing the events of the conflict between Richmond, Virginia Mayor-Elect, Henry K. Ellyson and departing Mayor, George Chahoon in April of 1870. Hall wrote that they have "two Mayors, two Chief's of Police, and two Councils." In an effort to oust the outgoing Mayor, Hall, in support of Ellyson reported that they kept Chahoon and his followers blocked in the market building without food or water for a straight 36 hours before aid arrived in Chahoon's defense. Scope and Contents From the Collection:

Handmade album featuring 17 photographs of children and their teacher attending school in Mombasa, Kenya. Most of the children in the photos are wearing leg braces or confined to a wheel chair. Each photograph provides a caption along with the names of the children. One photograph indicates that the children's handicap is a result of contracting polio. The front cover of the album is signed by the students who attended the school.

Content Description From the Collection: Four page letter addressed to his son, Jim. In it, Rodgers recounts a raid staged by about 100 of the "darkies" in Petersburg, Virginia that was foiled by the police. He also comments that there are plenty of white voters in town who should be able to make the "colored rule gone forever." Other contents of his letter are of a personal nature. The last page of the letter is a note from his sister, Maud Mary Rodgers. She reports that their dog, Carlo, is alive and stashed at Mr. Walkers...

The author is quick to give his opinion of the black population on the island and his disdain for them all. He even comments that there are so many it is scary to think what one should do were they to "rise up and attempt to cut our throats". He also remarks that he has a new "patent Volcanic Repeating Pistol which shoots ten times before...

Engraving print of Lord Botetourt, right facing with the additional writing, "Done from a medalion of the same size in the possession of John Norton, Esq. To the General Assembly of Virginia, this plate is most humbly inscribed by their obliged humble servant. H. Ashby." Publication of this print was from London by H. Ashby.
