Content Description
This collection consists of chaps, ankle bells, and a medallion worn by Bernard "Buddy" Lebenson (Class of 1967) in his role as the William & Mary American Indian mascot between 1964-1967, as well as digital images of Lebenson in costume. Lebenson's context for the photographs is as follows: W&M INDIAN 1 - "The photo with Wampo Feathers and me in a Chief’s headdress was either 1965 or 1966."; W&M INDIAN 3 - "In the summer of 1965, I took [Wampo] Feathers to a summer camp where I was working as the riding instructor. I was able to train with her that summer but, more importantly, the photo shows her face head-on. I really have no other photos and, unfortunately, there was never a picture of me as the Indian in any of those years’ Colonial Echo. I used to rider her with either a curb bit or a ring Hackamore and very rarely used any sort of saddle."; W&M INDIAN 7 - "The black and white photo was a picture in the Charlotte Observer during the basketball finals in the Spring of either 1966 or ’67"; W&M INDIAN - "The one of a Brave riding and a Squaw next to him was taken on Duke of Gloucester Street during the Homecoming Parade of 1964. That is me on the horse and Alice beside me."
