Scope and Contents

The Mack Screenplay is a Blaxploitation film written by Robert James Poole, referred to as Bobby Poole, a prison inmate who claimed to have written the screenplay on toilet paper.  It was made into a film directed by Michael Campus and starred Max Julien and Richard Prior.

The screenplay is about a man named John "Goldie" Mickens (Julien), a recent parolee who decides to become a pimp in Oakland, California in pursuit of wealth.  However, his brother Olinga, a Black Nationalist, opposed this choice of work in his efforts to clean up his community.  Despite his brother's objections, Goldie becomes a pimp and enjoys success with the help of his right hand man, Slim (Pryor) and head prostitute.  Soon, Goldie is making a large amount of money and gains a large amount of attention from a heroin kingpin named Fat Man and also two corrupt and racists detectives, Hank and Jed.  As the story continues, Goldie's mother is assaulted by the corrupt detectives which results in her death.  They also kill Slim.  In response Goldie and Olinga kill the detectives.  The screenplay ends with Goldie leaving Oakland because of the danger to him.

It is important to note that the director Michael Campus, stayed in Oakland for two months and befriended a real pimp and drug dealer, Frank Ward, and based the movie character, Goldie, on him.  In order to film in Ward's territory, Campus needed Ward's permission.  In fact, Ward is in the film and supplies all of the junkies, pimps, and women who appear as extras in the film.  The area of filming, while under Ward's control, was also an area claimed by the Black Panthers.  Indeed, the crew often had bottles and trash cans thrown off from roof tops toward them while they were filming. Halfway through filming, Ward was shot and killed and production was moved to another location.
