5 June 1862. John [Jenkins], "Camp at Fair Oaks," [Va.], to Mary A. Benjamin, Smyrna, Del. Particularly detailed account of the Battle of Fair Oaks, including wounded/killed information, troop movements, and a small sketch showing troop placement; tells of a Col. Riley being dismissed due to drunkeness in public. [Letter written on letterhead showing the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., with the slogan printed "The House that Uncle Sam Built."] 8 pp. ALS. 16 March 1862. J[ohn] H.B. Jenkins, Camp Sedgwick, Virginia, to Mary A. Benjamin, "care of John Lewis Jenkins," Smyrna, Del. Tells of preparations to march to Manassas Junction; however, plans were changed to a secret naval expedition, destination probably New Orleans; 32 steamers are at Alexandria, Va., awaiting his troops* arrival. 2 pp. ALS. Including ALS, 22 March [1862], from J.H.B. Jenkins, Old Point Comfort, Va., "Near Fortress Monroe," to Mary A. Benjamin, Smyrna, Del., giving details of sail thus far; describes "tented d'abri" they are sleeping in; tells of scarcity of supplies, including tobacco, soap, fresh water, and stamps; traveled to Hampton, describing "the village" being burnt and ravaged, with the "church ... burnt down and tombs broken open"; has been eating mussels; anxious to see her; is in the "3d Corps d'armee," with McClellan leading. 3 pp.
