Received his letter of condolence [on the death of his wife] today; feels that he understands what it is like to lose a wife; is in prety good health; invites him and his family to visit him at Laurel Hill; his nephew, Matthew F[ontaine Maury] wrote the letter for him, since his eyesight is poor. 1p. L Bears LAS frim M[attew] Fontaine Maury, [Laurel Hill, Va] to his Uncle, James Maury, New York, New Y[ork], [19 Nov. 1834]. His parents are healthy; is not sure when he will go to Tennessee; hopes to publish his "nautical work" in the spring as long as he is not called into active duty in the Navy; hopes the book will make his name known to others in the Navy so does not want to give it to him; might give it to COngress, as he feels legislation is necessary to fix the abuses the document describes; sends regars to Ann; Mrs. Mrs. Maury sends regards. 3pp. Including Ts of L and ALS, 3pp.
