Scope and Contents

May 4, 1772 letter from James Hardyman explaining why he hasn't been able to collect all of his surveying fees. Includes survey accounts between 1765 and 1772 with columns for year, name and acreage, and fee. Names included are Capt. William Arvill, William Cole, Capt. Littlebury & Hardyman, Alexander Walker, Travis Harwood, Littlebury Irby, Col. Benjamin Harrison, John Brown and John ?, John Wayles McWilliam, Bats Lacy?, Thomas Matthies, Robert Walker, Richard Hales, Francis Hardyman, William Hardyman, Honorable William Byrd Esq. Westover, William Stith, Stith Gregory, John Minge, Samuel Harwood, Andrew and Benjamin Crew, Hardyman Dancy, William Holt, Francis Timberlake, John Brown, and Thomas Ballard. Some entries give details about where the acreage is located and the purpose of the survey.

"Memorandum of surveys in Charles City County from the year 1741 to the year 1772 as recorded in the Surveyors books of the County." Includes year, names, number of acres, fees and a few locations. Names: John Minge - around a church, between Crutchfield & Gunn, for W. William Hunt (1741 and 1745), Phip and John Edloe (1747); William Parry - between Kennon & Minge (1747), for Benjamin Cocke (1750), for Estate of B. Marston, for John Christian (1753), for Samuel Apperson (1756); John Street - , between Lightfoot and Edloe, for John Crew (1763); and James Hardyman -for William Hudson (1767), ? Irby (1767), between Brown & Woodrop (?) (1769), for Young & Stokes (1771), Samuel Harwood (1771) and Pinkaman? Perry (1772).

"List of Surveying Fees for Charles City County from 1765 till 1771 by James Hardyman, Surveyor," dated 1772. Includes names and fees. Names: William Cole (in Parries Patent) (1765-66), Travis Harwood, and Browne, and "received of Benjamin Harrison" for Bats Lacy, Thomas Matthies, John Hardyman, William Byrd, William Stith, Andrew Crew, Hardyman Dancy, William Holt, Young Stokes and William Hudson. This list a gift of Elizabeth Hamlin.
