Scope and Contents

The following description and excerpts were provided by the seller: "The author talks about his sister, “Sarah R. Detrick” and a daughter named Ida (...) George talks about taking care of the local church and he also takes care of the graveyard and all the graves; There is an article about George in a book called “When the days were not long enough. The history of Shawnee Pennsylvania 1890-1900” and it was written by Frank Labar, a family George mentions quite often in the diary. The article describes George and explains just what he does in the village of Shawnee: "Beyond the church, toward the Hollow Road, was a home on the right owned by Jake Transue and his two sisters, "Mandy and Sis" now occupied by the Ray Osfeld family. George Strunk lived in the house on Hollow Road later occupied by Clyde Heller, now the Kenneth Coss home. He was a man about five feet ten inches, wore chin whiskers and was all muscle. Never knew him to be sick. He was the janitor of the church as long as I lived in Shawnee. Kept the church clean, took care of the furnace, had charge of the cemetery, always dug all the graves, tolled the church bell for all funerals. Funerals were always held in the church, and when the procession came in sight George would toll the bell, one strike every half minute. He always had a fine garden and kept chickens and a cow. George Strunk carried the mail when I was a boy in Shawnee....." "In the diary George also talks about having the authority to arrest people in town.
