Vanity Fair caricature by Ape (pseudonym for artist Carlo Pellegrini) titled, “Men of the Day, No. 28 The Poet Laureate,” dated 22 July 1871. Swinburne is depicted with beard, large top hat, and carrying a pocket watch with one hand in his pocket.
