Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The collection consists of 5 items.

The first is a printed circular from Rogers and addressed to Colonel Tompkins of Matthews Co. and dated May 13, 1835. It was printed while Rogers was a faculty member at William & Mary. The circular asks for help regarding his "Geological Reconnoissance," procuring specimens and answering a list of questions provided.

The second letter is addressed to C. J. Richards of Richmond, though a Mr. Walker is also an intended recipient, dated January 7, 1839 and written while Rogers was a faculty member at the University of Virginia. He apologies for his delayed reply, stating his reason is includes his absence from home combined with "a mistake of my servant." Both recipients are associated with the Lyceum from whom Rogers declines an invitation to visit.

The third item is dated April 20, 1862 and is written by Rogers while in Boston to William T. Brigham. Rogers declines an invitation by the Harvard Society for Natural History to speak at their anniversary event.

The fourth item is a letter written by Rogers in Boston to Samuel Eliot and dated November 4, 1868. It discusses an address Roger's previously delivered.

The fifth item is dated November 9, 1881 and written by Rogers in Boston to Professor Harkness. It discusses a cooperative including the National Academy and others.
