Item 5: Jubal A. Early, Lynchburg, Virginia, to General Horatio G. Wright, 1890 Dec. 3

Encloses two copies of his "Memoir of the Last Year of the War"; his "quarters" were recently burned, and many of his papers and books were damaged; additionally, after the fire, he was searching through the ruins, when some of the walls crumbled, nearly killing him; had also sent many of his copies of "Memoirs" to the Southern Historical Society in Richmond; mentions a supposed dispatch from General Longstreet before the Battle of Cedar [Creek], which was false, as well as other stories circulating about that campaign in the [Shenandoah] Valley in connection with [Ulysses S.] Grant's "Personal Memoirs"; quotes Grant "Early had lost more men in killed wounded and captured than Sheridan commanded from the first to the last." 4 pages.
