Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

Travel diary of Frances Evarts Clark of Washington, D.C. on a trip to Asia and Europe. Her first entry is from Honolulu, Hawaii in November, 1926. The Captain of the U.S.S. Charmont, John H. Blackburn, signed her diary along with a few fellow travelers. Near the front of the diary, she has drawn a pencil picture of a ship with flying birds and has written, "Outward Bound" and "5 December 1926, A.W.R."

In December, Clark is in Guam where they quarantined because there is measles onboard the ship. She then visits Manila, Philippines. In April and May, 1927 she is in China and from June 29 through August, she is in Japan. On September 3, she travels to Europe on the U.S.S. Arabic where her first stop is Antwerp, Belgium, then on to Plymouth and other parts of the United Kingdom as well as Amsterdam, France, Switzerland, and Italy.

Clark describes the people she encounters, including observations on their clothing and activities. She gives detailed descriptions and some comments on the highlights of each area. She spends enough time in each area to give detailed descriptions of the way of life of the countries, towns and villages that she visits. She also writes about her and her travel companions' activities on and off the ship.
