Scope and Contents

The 1901 Land Book: This book includes 103 pages of tax records for the year 1901. Included are records for taxation of tracts of land outside the towns plus records for town lots in the towns of Brownsburg and Goshen. Both these groups of records are grouped by "white" property owners and "colored" property owners. The records are complete with all landowners from A to Z. Information provided for each land owner located outside the towns includes: name of owner, place of residence of the owner, nature of the owners' estate, whether held in fee or for life, number of acres, name of the trace and description of the land as to water courses, mountains, or other places on or near which it lies, distance and bearing from the courthouse, value of the land per acre including buildings, value of the land excluding buildings, value of the buildings, amount of tax on the land and buildingsat 30 cents on every $100 value for support of public schools, total tax, explanations of alterations during the year: from whom transferred and when an dhow th eowner derived the land, amount of tax for county purposes, road tax, free school taxes: tax amount for county free schools, amount of tax for district free schools. Information provided for each land owner located in the towns includes: name of owner, place of residence of owner, nature of the owner's estate wheter held in fee or for life, lot number, number of town section or block, value of the lot, vlaue of the lot including buildings, amount of tax on the lot and buildings, explanation of alterations during the year, etc. Names of "white" property owners owning tracts of land include Robert B. Anderson heirs of Rockbridge, Keziah Allen heirs of Rockbridge, F. B. Armentrout of Rockbridge, Lucinda Ailstock of Rockbridge, John R. Buchanan of Rockbridge, Joe Bell of Rockbridge, Cattett Miller Bell of Staunton, Sarah Bulser of Rockbridge, Barbara Bolen of Rockbridge, Joseph Beard of Rockbridge, James Brown of Rockbridge, Marcissa Beckner of Rockbridge, James E. Bosworth of Rockbridge, William Bayne of Rockbridge, Central Iron Company of Virginia in Staunton, etc. etc. etc. Two Books: 1902 Land Book: 123 Pages and 82 Pages The records are same type of records as listed above for 1901. Plus for each family, the pages give detailed information about all their land and personal possessions including numbers of hogs, goats, sheep, cattle, books and pictures, mechanics' tools, farming implements, watches, clocks, musical instruments, household goods, money in banks, etc. 1915 Land Book: 76 Pages Complete alphabetically from letters A through Z (Zimmerman) Including all communities of this county: Brownsburg, Goshen, Moffatts Creek, Lexington, etc. Same type of tax information as above. For each family, the pages give detailed information about all their land and personal possessions including numbers of hogs, goats, sheep, cattle, books and pictures, mechanics' tools, farming implements, watches, clocks, musical instruments, household goods, money in banks, etc. There are separate pages for "whites" and separate pages for "colored" with complete information for both.
