Copy of an April 7, 1927 letter from John G. James to Samuel Y. Ferguson about Andrew Jackson and the VMI (Virginia Military Institute) Cadets in the Civil War and about Charles A. James, a student at the University of Virginia, who served with Robert E. Lee.

The John G. James papers were given to the Virginia Military Institute by an ancestor in 1992.

Francis Henney Smith Papers

Two letters written by Francis H. Smith. The first letter, September 6, 1860, to James T. Ames, concerns Armory, "model musket," and swords. The second letter, March 7, 1888, concerns his resignation as superintendent of Virginia Military Institute in 1886 which was withdrawn and an investigation into his period of service by the Virginia General Assembly. Both letters include a typescript copy.

Virginia Military Institute Cadets' Anniversary Ball Collection

Program for a "Cadets' Anniversary Ball...to be given by the Corps of Cadets of the Virginia Military Institute, on the Evening of the 5th of July, 1858.  Lists the President, L. Wilber Reid, and 36 names of the managers. Handwritten note at the bottom, "Compliments of Cadets J. R. Be[g]an, R. T. Washington." Includes two admission tickets, one for supper and one to the Ball Room, plus a card entitled "Engagements" with line 2 (of 20 lines) "with dear Ludie-Bob." Possibly a dance card.
