Barker-Cooke Papers

Letters and business papers, chiefly 1848-1866, of James E. Cooke of Powhatan, Virginia and the Barker family of Fluvanna County, Virginia. Includes letters relating to the hiring out of slaves, plantation operations and the Civil War. Civil War letters are between John H. Barker and Henry J. Dobbs of the 18th Virginia Regiment of the Confederate army concerning the Battle of First Bull Run/Manassas.

Dates: 1809-1889; Majority of material found in 1848-1866

Correspondence, personal accounts, 7 ledgers, and legal papers, 1869-1912, of Robert S. Campbell, sheriff of Fluvanna County, Va. Includes materials on raising cattle, travel, the duties of a sheriff, and material relative to Fluvanna County. One of the ledgers is 502 pages in length and contains numerous correspondence loosely tucked inside the volume.

Fluvanna Female Institute Account Book and John Hartwell Cocke Farm Inventory Book

Account book of Fluvanna Female Institute with names of patrons and payment receipts for board. Also includes an inventory and account book of a farm at "Bremo," Fluvanna County, Va. This farm was presumably owned by John Hartwell Cocke. Includes produce sold and expenses paid. Of note, are some entries that include tax in kind payments of oats to either the United States Union or Confederacy. There is a loose page of inventory of implements at "Lower Bremo," New Kent County, Va.

James Galt Diary, 1835-1844

Diary of James Galt, of "Point of Fork," Fluvanna County, Virginia which concerns farm management on several plantations, activities of himself and his family and includes lists of clothing given out to slaves (slaves listed by family group) and includes an incident concerning the alleged poisoning of slaves (entry for 18 January 1839.)

Letters and accounts of James Galt of Columbia, Virginia (Fluvanna County).  Many letters and accounts concern his guardianship of his nieces and nephews.  Legal documents concern William Galt's estate (1851-1854), deed as executor for John Allen's estate (1839) and an opinion of Hawkins vs. Miles (1819).

Account books, 1820-1833, of the mercantile firm of William Galt, Sr. and William Galt, Jr. (a distant relative) of Richmond, Virginia. The later account book contains numerous entries concerning John Allan, the foster father of Edgar Allan Poe as well as entries concerning James Galt and "Point of Fork," Fluvanna County, Virginia.

Dr. James Bolton of Richmond, Va. noted oculist, was the guardian of Edward B. Newburn.
