Robert Hunt Land Papers

Scope and Contents This collection contains materials relating to Robert Hunt Land's work on the history of the College of William and Mary. It includes a published description of Land's proposed history of the college, notes and correspondence about the proposed history, and biographical information about alumni (1814-1881). It also contains correspondence between Herbert Ganter, Earl Gregg Swem, and Robert Hunt Land about Ganter's research on William and Mary at the Library of Congress.

Scope and Contents Letter written by William & Mary alumnus Claiborne replying to William & Mary alumnus Griswold's invitation to return to Williamsburg, an invitation given by the "Committee to the approaching Celebration." The letter was written eight days after the 1859 fire and speaks to its rebuilding and the perseverance of the College, its faculty, and alumni.

George W. Lindsay Diary

Scope and Contents One dark brown memo book, 2.75" x 4", containing George Lindsay's diary from his time at the College of William and Mary and at home in Richmond. At the end of the diary is a list of names and list of expenditures. Lindsay’s activities include going on walks in the evening with friends; attending church every Sunday, either Episcopal or Baptist churches; taking lessons in math and history; attending parties such as Mrs. Tucker's; studying hard; and going on school picnics. Lucian Minor Papers

Scope and Contents The collection includes a letter written by Minor to an unknown person on August 2, 1857. In addition to personal news, he disucsses an abolitionist paper, "The Kentucky News." He further describes living in Williamsburg since 1855 to chair the law department. He states that it is a "pleasant place to live in: abounding in people both polite and kind." Concerns defending Madison against a claim to deprive him of land surveyed near Guyandot Falls by Breckinridge. Asks Breckinridge to discount fee at next College [of William and Mary] settlement. Also concerns Madison's Map of Virginia (1807) and a new method of taking latitudes.
