Taliaferro Family Papers

Correspondence, financial, legal and other written material of the John P. Taliaferro Family and Richard P. Taliaferro Family of Gloucester and Ware Neck, Virginia. Richard P. Taliaferro was the son of John P. Taliaferro. Genealogical material on the Fox, Oliver and Read family included. Includes a 1857 letter from a servant, possibly a slave, asking for her "mistress" to bring Patsy for a visit and a 1856 list of hired out slaves.

Also letters and accounts, 1832, 1869, and undated, of the Warner Throckmorton Taliaferro family and a history of "Dunham Massie" by Spotswood H. Jones.

John P. Taliaferro Papers

Letters, 1846-1849, written to John P. Taliaferro, while a student at the College of William and Mary from his guardian, George B. Taliaferro of Baltimore, Md. and from William Lawson Fauntleroy and other friends and relatives. The letters are primarily concerned with John's future plans, the cost of his education, the activities of his friends, and the affairs of his relatives in Gloucester county, Va. Also included are three 1834 orders of the York County, Va. court.

Collection includes letter, 1910, from Rev. William Byrd Lee, Gloucester C. H., Virginia to Richard P. Taliaferro], stating his willingness to present Taliaferro to the Bishop for confirmation and explaining where to find necessary instruction for confirmation.  Includes a "Book of Common Prayer" which was presented to Taliaferro by F. L. J. (otherwise unidentified).

There is a dedication page to Walker's wife. Carbon version used for the autobiography "The Honey-Pod Tree: The Life Story of Thomas Calhoun Walker," which was published in 1958. Account book of William E. Wiatt kept in Gloucester and Mathews counties, Virginia containing accounts, 1861-1874. Includes a record of books lent to soldiers of the 26th Virginia Infantry Regiment August 1862-September 1863 and of marriages, 1856-1881, performed by Wiatt mostly in King and Queen, Gloucester and Mathews counties. There is a list, 1869-1870, of students in his school in Gloucester County and his accounts indicate that he also worked as a land surveyor.
