Scope and Contents

Journal of John S. Barret, plantation owner in Alabama.  Barret writes extensively about his farm, weather conditions, crop harvests and livestock.  Some entries record hunting opportunities and their results.  One page lists all of the slaves born to his plantation since 1802 and the woman they were born to.  Another entry records the sadness of the untimely death of his friend, William Aylett.

Scope and Contents From the Collection:

Diaries, 1900 and 1912, of Mary E. Anderson of Alleghany and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In daily entries she talks about chores, social visits, church, collecting books for 'Mrs. Booker T. Washington's club for colored women.'

Also included are 2 news clippings regarding predictions made by clairvoyants and one clipping with a recipe for facial cream. There is also a postcard featuring Betty Springer as well as well as a calling card with her name on it.

Content Description From the Collection: Two letters from Dorwin Keller to Stella Breece dated February 22, 1945 and March 15, 1945. In the first letter he thanks her for the box of goodies and recites a poem about the country in which he is based, India. Harcum also shared some of the results of the tests he and his colleagues, including students, performed.

Ten letters and seven postcards, 1940-1945 from concentration camp prisoners in Germany. Letters contain the name of the detainee, date of birth, and prisoner number. The majority of the letters were written on official camp stationary which contained the rules and warnings (in German) of what was allowed to be included in correspondence addressed to the detainees.

Law suit filed in Warren County in the state of Mississippi for the June term of the circuit court in 1866. The plaintiffs of the case were John C. and George Wilson Humphreys. Their complaint was against the company of Wells and Green. Their charge is that an agreement was made in January of 1864 for the sale and delivery of 8,000 cypress logs but that the logs were never delivered. The plaintiffs were seeking damages in the sum of $100,000.00.

British and foreign Anti-Slavery Society invitation sent to an unidentified individual from Louis Alexis Chamerouzow on October 30, 1860 for an event to be held by the society on November 2, 1860. On the back of the invitation is the fragment of a letter concerning spirituality and remaining humble in service. Creator and recipient of the letter are unknown.

Four page letter addressed to "Cousin" from A. E. Loenbach in Harrisonburg, Virginia dated 17 September 1888. Loenbach describes the illness that consumed most of her family over the past few weeks, blaming Typhoid fever as the cause. She also reports that a grandson was born to the family and is healthy at two months of age.

Three slave registries from Puerto Rico written in Spanish dated 1868, 1869, and 1871. The names of the enslaved individuals are not known, but descriptions of each, including race and age as well as their enslavers' names, are listed on the documents.
