World War II photograph album created by Earle Lloyd Johnson, an African American who served on the Pacific coast during the war as part of the 4188th Quarter Master Service Company.  In the book, Johnson gives details in regard to names on photographs, his troop movements with corresponding dates, ships he served upon, and a list of casualties from his company during his service.

(Richard Archibald) Patterson to James Thomas, Jr. dated March 14, 1855.  Patterson is writing from Norfolk, Va. to Thomas is Richmond.  In the letter, he complains about the abundance of tobacco and the negative effects of the surplus on his ability to sell his tobacco for a decent price.  "there is tobacco enough in Norfolk for two places like it and besides the trade here possesses the same ammonia for bright Tobacco as almost everywhere else- They want nothing...

Two letters to Miss Virginia Emory from Richmond, VA from a Joe and Joey.  They may be the same individual, but the envelope of one of the letters sheds some doubt.  The letters are informational in that they detail duty stations in Florida and highlight the importance of morale for the soldiers preparing to go to battle in World War II and the role correspondence had in maintaining high morale.

One handwritten document which includes a copy of a 1785 bond whereby Martin Ashby of Louisa County agrees to pay one thousand pounds to George Noble of Frederick County, Virginia for 350 acres; a 1784 bond to Edward Snickers for an exchange of land between Snickers and Ashby for 306  acres in Frederick County and 350 acres in Loudoun County; and letters from Edward Snickers about his land transactions with Ashby.

Letter from William Edwards from Richmond, Virginia to his sister dated November 3, 1850.  In it he relays his regrets that work commitments will not allow him to visit as soon as he would like.  Edwards is a lawyer or judge and is summoned to serve in the Alexandria, Virginia area local and state circuit courts for the foreseeable future.  He asks that she send along his regrets and wishes everyone well, even the servants, especially the servant Alfred.

A letter dated November 29 from Whitworth asking for Dr. Galt’s opinion on Whitworth visiting a patient at the Eastern Lunatic Asylum named Mary.  He explains that in recent letters, under much stress, he promised to pay Mary a visit, but with much more sober and clear thinking he has decided it best to stay away, unless, of course, it will cause more stress to the patient, Mary.
