Scope and Contents

One box of notes, media guides, schedules, programs and other materials related to the men's gymnastics team for the yearears 1974-2015. A majority of the collection is made up of programs, media guides and schedules related to the men's and women's gymnastics teams and the various events they competed in. The collection also contains a folder of gym notes from the late 1970s and early 1980s written by long-standing men's team head coach Cliff Gauthier. Only one folder in the collection pertains to the women's team while the rest pertain exclusively to the men's team.

This collection is open to all researchers. Biographical / Historical

As of 2014, the team has achieved two individual championships: Scott McCall on the rings in 1996 and Ramon Jackson on the parallel bars in 2004. The team has appeared at five NCAA championship events. The team is headed by long-standing head coach Cliff Gauthier. Gauthier has been selected as the College Gymnastics Association Collegiate Coach of the Year 15 times en route to recording more than 800 career victories. He has led the Tribe to four Eastern College Athletic Conference title, including the program’s most recent championship in 2014. That season was also highlighted by a trip to the NCAA Championships and a final national team ranking of No. 12. Individually, senior Landon Funiciello became a three-time NCAA All-American on rings and was honored as the 2014 USA Gymnastics Senior Gymnast of the Year and the ECAC Senior Gymnast of the Year. Gauthier’s gymnasts have combined to earn 216 USA Gymnastics Collegiate All-America awards, more than any other university since the inception of the awards in 1990. Additionally, W&M has claimed the College Gymnastics Association’s National Academic Team Titles a record eight times (1991, 1992, 2002, 2008, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016) and placed second on six occasions (1994, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2009, 2013). The 2014 squad posted the highest recorded grade point average (3.622) since the inception of the team award in 1991.

As of 2014, the women's gymnastics team, has won six ECAC gymnastics championships and one NAIA gymnastics title.
