Benjamin Butler Letter to Henry A. Wise

One page letter in response to President Wise's claim for the college of William and Mary to receive war repararations caused to the property during the Civil War. Butler's response to Wise was that the filed claim was not approved by Congress.

John Adams Dix Letter to Henry A. Wise

Scope and Contents

Letter, dated April 28, 1863, from Union Major General John Adams Dix to Confederate General Henry A. Wise requesting he stop the attacks on the Union-held insane asylum in Williamsburg, Virginia. Dix writes that, although the asylum is under the control of the Union, there have been repeated attack by officers of the Confederacy on its employees and residents. Dix also mentions he has directed General Keyes to re-occupy Williamsburg.

Letter from John Tyler to Virginia Governor Henry A. Wise dated July 4, 1855. The letter states that Wise's being elected Governor would not be inconsistent with his remaining on William & Mary's Board of Visitors, and that other members of the Board hope Wise will not resign.

S.H. Parker, Va. L[and] Off[ice], Richmond, [Va.], to Hon[ora]ble G[ideon] D. Camden. Topics include a land warrant and a visit to Norfolk where he saw Governor Wise and notes the lack of support for Stephen A. Douglas.  States that Douglas men are "know-nothings,: and quotes (Wise), "there are a few brawling politicians who make a noise, but it is in vain to kick against the pricks."

In the first letter, dated May 7, 1834, Griffin acknowledges his son's recent change of plans, wherein his son now has a teaching position and is living in a public house. Griffin expresses concern over the kinds of individuals his son is likely to meet at the public house and how they may be negative influences on him....

Henry A. Wise Letter

Scope and Contents This collection contains a letter from Brigadier General Henry A. Wise, Lewisberg [sic], Va. [W. Va.], to Adjutant and Inspector General Samuel Cooper, no place. The dispatch is reporting troop strength at Gauley Bridge and reports on guns and ammunition. He writes that the area is unsound. At a place called Williamsburg [W. Va.?], there is "a violent Yankee partisan, a Dr. Thatcher" who shot at his [HAW] orderly, wounding him in the head. Wise asks that three field officers--Col. J. Lucius...
