Appointment of Edmund Gibson, Bishop of London, as Chancellor of the College of William & Mary

Appointment of Edmund Gibson, Bishop of London, as Chancellor of the College of William & Mary, dated April 2, 1729. Written in Latin on parchment, it is signed by James Blair, who was both President of William & Mary and Rector of the Board of Visitors in 1729. The appointment also features the original college seal.

Solon Lee Baird Pledge to Teach Fulfillment Form

This collection consists of one form, completed by Solon Lee Baird on April 15, 1905, reporting how he fulfilled a pledge to the State Male Normal College and William & Mary to teach. He served as Principal of a Virginia school.

Pledges such as this were required of Virginia students who received financial assistance to attend State colleges like William & Mary , with the understanding they would teach in Virginia upon graduation.

Report of Benjamin Henry Bascom Hubbard's scholarship and conduct while a student at William & Mary for the period ending in December 1860. There are remarks and signatures from Edward S. Joynes regarding Greek, Robert J. Morrison regarding Moral Philosophy and Political Economy, and Charles Morris regarding Constitutional Law. The form is also signed by Thomas McCandlish, Secretary of the Faculty.

This collection consists of one form, completed by Edward Francis Birckhead, reporting how he fulfilled his pledge to the State Male Normal College and William & Mary to teach. He served as principal of Ivy High School in Albemarle County, Virginia after leaving William & Mary.

Pledges such as this were required of Virginia students who attended William and Mary receiving financial assistance with the understanding they would teach in Virginia upon graduation.

Bishop John Johns Letter

Letter from Bishop John Johns in Richmond, Virginia to Henry Anthon, D.D. and Rector of St. Mark's Church, Bowery, New York dated June 11, 1849.  Subject matter of the letter is the College of William and Mary and specifically the appointment of Dr. Stone to the College.  John Johns served as the fifteenth President of the College from 1849 until 1854.  He was also  the 4th Bishop of Virginia, elected in 1862.

Joseph Carrington Cabell Papers relating to the College of William & Mary
